Ydolothytum/In The Circle Of Spectral Forces/Crush The Desert records/2023 Demo Review

Ydolothytum  are  an  international  band  with  embers  from  Poland  and  Italy  that  plays  an  old  school  mixture  of  black  and  folk  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  demo  "In  the  Circle  Of  Spectral  Forces"  which  was  released  by  Crush  The  Desert  Records.

A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  demo  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.  Clear  pagan  vocals  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording  along  with  the  music  being  more  closer  to  the  90's  underground  era  of  folk  metal  instead  of  the  more  modern  style  and  black  metal  screams  are  also utilized  at  times.

When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  keyboards  can  also b e  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.  A  lot  of t he  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  classic  Nordic  style  and  all  of  the  tracks  stick  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  musical  direction.

Ydolothytum  plays  a  style  of  black/folk  metal  that  is  more  closer  to  the  classic  style  of  Isengard  and  Storm  and  avoid  the  modern  ways  of  the  genre,  The  production  sounds  very  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  legends  of  the  Eastern  Carpathian,  Werewolves,  Vampires  and  Strigoi.

In  my  opinion  Ydolothytum  are  a  very  great  sounding  old  school  black/folk  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of t his  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  demo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Night  of  Cursed  Souls".  8  out  of  10.

Allez, citez-moi un label français qui sort des albums de black metal. Même s’il propose d’autres styles en plus du BM, pas de souci ! Vous dites quoi ? Osmose ? Ladlo ? Season of Mist ? Transcendance ? Adipocère ? Chanteloup !!! Bon, bon, vous remontez loin là quand même avec le dernier… Non, celui dont j’ai l’intention de parler aujourd’hui est plus discret. Il a sorti très peu d’albums en un peu plus de 10 ans et pourtant on a tous dû déjà entendre son nom : Crush the Desert Records ! Si, si, il est français ! Je sais bien que certains ne s’en étaient pas rendu compte, et c’est bien légitime puisqu’il a tendance à signer des groupes de toutes nationalités… sauf français ! On a trouvé chez lui les Russes de VOLKOLAK et ceux de WOLFKRIEG, les Biélorusses de PIAREVARACIEN ou encore les Chiliens de ELTUN, mais des Français… J’ai beau chercher, il n’y en a pas. Ah si ! EMBATERION et un EP en 2014, dans un style qui ne me concerne pas : du death / thrash…

Eh bien le tour du monde des nationalités continue en 2022 avec deux nouveaux groupes. Un allemand du nom de KAMPFESWUT, et un espagnol qui s’appelle NHAARG. C’est de celui-ci dont nous allons parler dans cette chronique, après avoir précisé que ce n’est pas la première collaboration entre l’homme derrière ce groupe et cette écurie puisque monsieur Nhaarg joue aussi pour DURTHANG, autre formation qui a publié une démo chez le Français. Nhaarg n’est pas un nouveau venu dans le black metal, et il est également membre de PESTICUM, groupe très underground qui ne sort que des demos depuis 2010, sans se préoccuper du format « album ». Nhaarg ne parvient pas à se satisfaire de ces projets, et c’est ainsi qu’en 2020 il a décidé d’en créer un nouveau, encore plus personnel et portant son propre nom : NHAARG.

Pourquoi ? Avait-il quelque originalité ou différence à apporter à sa musique en jouant seul ? Eh bien, presque. Il ne va pas créer ici des ambiances révolutionnaires, mais plutôt se complaire dans une autre branche du black metal, une branche qu’il fait bien plaisir de retrouver tant elle me semble insuffisamment représentée : la black metal lourd et sinueux. Hmmmmm... Pas sûr que le terme soit suffisamment clair... Alors disons que NHAARG n’a pas choisi un black metal qui matraque, qui va vite ou qui veut détruire par la haine, mais plutôt qu’il choisir un rythme bien plus lent pour s’immiscer progressivement dans l’âme de l’auditeur. Sur les six morceaux, presque tous ont cette dominante vicieuse, cette approche sadique et perverse. Ainsi, « Aura », « Black Light Shining » et « En mi bosque negro de la desesperación » ont de gros relents de JUDAS ISCARIOT et CLANDESTINE BLAZE. Bon, calmons-nous, le charisme et l’efficacité sont juste un bon cran en-dessous, mais les ressemblances sont bien là. « Those Who Are Crying Forever » aussi contient cette formule, mais avec un passage plus nerveux, tout comme le titre qui clôt l’album : « Chamber of the Dead Orc ». Malheureusement ce n’est pas très convaincant lorsque le groupe accelère le rythme, tombant dans du commun vite ennuyeux... « Void » quant à lui est un intrumental ambiant de 3 minutes.

Le talent de NHAARG est de parvenir à agripper l’auditeur et de lui plonger avec impassibilité la tête dans une flaque de noirceur. Il va l’y noyer sans avoir beaucoup de force à y mettre, se rendant compte que sa victime accepte volontiers son sort. C’est donc un album honnête et qui la capacité à transmettre aisément ses émotions négatives.

V roku 2016 vyšiel pod labelom Crush the Desert Records v poradí piaty album bieloruskej kapely Piarevaracien. Na Bese som už od nich recenzoval album s názvom Spadyčina, išlo však skôr o experimentálnu záležitosť, no vydaná bola v tom istom čase. Druhá plnohodnotná nahrávka toho roku nesie názov „U pošukach pačatku tych šlachoŭ“ a to už je pagan metal v pravom slova zmysle, ako sme mohli byť zvyknutí pri ich predchádzajúcich nahrávkach. Album má niečo vyše polhodiny a skladby sú pomenované Razdizel I. až VII, čo v preklade znamená kapitola I až VII.

U pošukach pačatku tych šlachoŭ je východoeurópskym pagan metalom ab origine a spĺňa všetky atribúty, ktoré by ste od takejto nahrávky očakávali. Melodika skladieb je postavená na hlavnej gitare v spolupráci s čistým vokálom, pričom v niektorých častiach sa pridávajú aj gajdy a píšťala, ktoré vnášajú onen „ľudový“ element. Ak ste niekde narazili v súvislosti s Piarevaracien na pojem black (folk) metal, ako to uvádzajú archívy, tak toho black metalu je tu naozaj poskromne. Isto tu nájdene nejaké gitarové riffy odkazujúce na tento žáner, ale ostaňme pri označení pagan/folk metal.

Ako som spomenul, jednotlivé skladby sú pomenované ako kapitoly a rozprávajú vojnové príbehy z bieloruskej histórie. Piesne zachovávajú štandardnú dĺžku okolo piatich minút, niektoré sa venujú historickým udalostiam priamo, iné zas abstraktne. Zaujímavým kúskom je druhá kapitola, kde sa black metalové riffy striedajú s klasickou pagan metalovou melodikou. Pieseň je mimochodom venovaná bitke pri Grunwalde roku 1410, ktorá je dôležitým medzníkom v spoločných litovských a bieloruských dejinách. Okrem škreku, ktorý na celom albume dostáva viacero podôb, sprevádza všetky piesne čistý spev hlavného protagonistu kapely. Ten je v stredných polohách istý a nedostáva sa do žiadnych kŕčovitých a polofalošných tónov. Farba hlasu mi príde priam identická so spevákom z ruskej kapely Svarga. Asi najveselšou z albumu mi príde tretia pieseň, ktorá paradoxne pojednáva o tragickom osude Bielorusov počas obdobia sovietskeho teroru. V tejto skladbe sa nachádza podstata toho, čo by sme mohli pomenovať ako typické folk metalové postupy.

Piesne sa nesú prevažne v strednom tempe a výnimkou ostáva predposledná skladba – úvod začína bez efektového skreslenia v melancholickej nálade. Atmosféru tu Piarevaracien buduje postupne, riffom black metalového razenia určujú tempo bicie, ktoré striedajú pomalé tempo dvojkopáku až ku klepačke. To najlepšie prichádza na koniec. Ak som sa poslednú dobu obúval do folk metalového žánru, ktorý trpí na skladateľský um a gýčovitosť, tak Piarevaracien dokazujú, že to ide aj umne. Osobne považujem za najvydarenejšiu poslednú skladbu, ktorá mi ostala v hlave ešte dlho po jej odznení, aj vďaka jej textu. Po krátkom úvode na píšťale preberie hlavné slovo melodické gitara vychádzajúca z death/thrash metalových postupov zahalených do pohanskej atmosféry.

Myslím, že Bielorusi v poslednej dobe produkujú v pagan/black/folk metalovom žánri kvalitný materiál, čo dokazuje aj recenzia na posledný Massenhinrichtung, ale aj album „U pošukach pačatku tych šlachoŭ“ od Piarevaracien. Aj keď nejde o žiadnu hudobnú virtuozitu, alebo o nejaký prevratný materiál, neunudí vás priemernosťou či fádnosťou. Je to veľmi dobre počúvateľná nahrávka, ktorá sa v diskografii určite nestratí. Textovo je album zasadený do tematiky histórie vlastnej domoviny, no nespadá do absolútnych primitívnych klišé o sekerách, mečoch, infantilnej podoby vojny či krčmovej ožieračke. Na bieloruskej zemi sa v bažinách a lesoch prelievala krv v obzvlášť krutých udalostiach a tento album o nich dôstojne rozpráva.

English overview

In 2016, the Belorussian band Piarevaracien released two albums. One of them (Spadyčina) was experimental and I have already reviewed it some time ago. Meanwhile, U Pošukach Pačatku Tych Šlachoŭ is pagan metal ab origine in Eastern European style with lots of melodic parts and slight touch of folk instruments. The songs tell stories of the wartimes in the history of Belarus and do it in a very decent way. It’s great that this album is not just another silly and repetitive stream of pagan metal (singing about swordfights and drinking beer). Piarevaracien released a decent album which, although not an example of instrumental virtuosity, won’t vanish among many others. I appreciate their approach to the pagan metal genre.
